Winter Style: Capturing the Beauty of the Season
The winter months can often present a lull in outdoor photography opportunities. To combat this, I introduced the “Winter Style” theme to my Student Model Program. This theme aimed to not only capture the beauty of the winter season but also showcase stylish and practical winter attire suitable for photo shoots.
Winter Style in Action: A Local Tree Farm
For this shoot, I sought out a local tree farm in Portland, a change from the more distant location used in previous years. While the trees were slightly less mature, the farm offered a picturesque winter setting with ample space for creativity. Furthermore, choosing a local location allowed me to build stronger relationships with local businesses.
Winter Fashion on Display
The student models embraced the theme with a variety of winter attire. Some opted for cozy winter coats and jackets, while others chose stylish vests paired with long sleeves or cozy sweatshirts. The overall aesthetic was casual and relaxed, reflecting the natural beauty of the winter landscape.
Capturing the Magic of Winter
The weather cooperated beautifully, with temperatures in the low 30s. Thankfully, we avoided any snowstorms or rain, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable shooting experience. The fresh snowfall provided a stunning backdrop, acting as a natural reflector and creating a soft, diffused light, ideal for winter photography.
Memorable Moments and Reflections
I particularly enjoyed capturing moments where my student models felt comfortable and confident enough to showcase their own personalities. Their genuine smiles and playful interactions brought a sense of warmth and life to the winter scenes.
While the “Winter Style” theme didn’t present any significant challenges, it reinforced my appreciation for winter photography. The soft light and the unique beauty of the snow create a truly magical atmosphere for capturing portraits.

The Student Model Program
The program is designed for middle & high school students (6th-12th grades) as a fun way to get their portraits taken by a professional photographer, feel like a model, and have a unique experience.
Students who apply are active on social media and are involved in school activities and their community. They have reliable transportation and have good time management skills to participate in 3 photo shoots a year.
Student Models have special Senior Portrait Pricing, receive cash referrals, exclusive themes, discounts on prints, digital images, products, and mini sessions. They have opportunities to earn Model Points, which can be applied to images or sessions.
The Student Model Program offers a variety of locations, poses, and a mix of individual and group photos with the other models. Student Models also gain confidence and learn time management and communication skills by working with a professional.
