Student Model Photo Shoots

Capturing the Magic of Flour Dance

The idea for my “Flour Dance” photoshoots emerged years ago when I had a vibrant group of student models who were passionate dancers. I yearned to create a unique and captivating experience that showcased their talent and energy. Inspired by stunning images I discovered on Pinterest, I envisioned a photoshoot that would capture the dynamic beauty of dance in a truly unforgettable way.

My primary goal was to produce a series of images that were not only visually striking but also distinctive. I wanted to offer this unique experience beyond my student model program, which I successfully implemented every other year. The “Flour Dance” shoots proved to be an excellent platform to showcase artistic and unconventional imagery, a departure from the typical portrait sessions.

Behind the Scenes

“Flour Dance” sessions are exclusively designed for dancers. We utilize flour as the primary medium, with vibrant colors added during the post-processing phase. All shoots are conducted at my home, taking advantage of my backyard for ample space. We strategically schedule the sessions for twilight, shortly after the sun sets. This approach provides a clean, black backdrop and ample space for dancers to execute jumps, leaps, and spins with ease. Moreover, the darkness simplifies the cleanup process significantly. To achieve a polished aesthetic, we lay down a tarp on the grass, ensuring a smooth and consistent background free from any distracting elements. The open field behind our property, combined with the fading light, creates the perfect dark backdrop for these dramatic photographs.

I require each student to bring an assistant, such as a parent, sibling, or friend. Ideally, the assistant should be familiar with the student’s dance style and able to provide encouragement and support during the shoot. The assistant will also assist with the flour application and overall coordination. Casual attire is recommended for assistants as they will be actively involved in the flour-related activities.

Dancers are encouraged to wear comfortable practice attire, such as leotards with skirts or shorts. Barefoot is preferred, although tights are optional. Prior to the shoot, I request that the dancers prepare and practice a specific dance routine. We often incorporate moves from their existing dance performances to enhance the individuality and uniqueness of each session. Furthermore, I encourage students to explore Pinterest for inspiration and select specific poses or movements they wish to incorporate into their “Flour Dance” performance. Jumps, hair flips, rapid movements, and spins are highly encouraged.

After each session, we meticulously clean up the flour and carefully store the tarp until the next shoot. The tarp is strategically placed in the furthest corner of my yard to minimize the risk of any injuries.

Flour Dance Results

To ensure optimal results, dancers are instructed to keep their hair down and arrive early to engage in a brief stretching routine.

Shooting with flour can be challenging, especially during windy conditions. However, the true magic unfolds during the post-processing stage. I meticulously refine the flour’s appearance, adding vibrant colors to create captivating and artistic images.

The “Flour Dance” photoshoots have consistently proven to be a resounding success. The resulting images are dynamic, artistic, and truly expressive. The students and their families have overwhelmingly responded with excitement and pride, eagerly sharing the photographs on social media platforms. Ultimately, the “Flour Dance” photoshoots have successfully achieved their intended goals, providing a unique and rewarding experience for all involved.

The Student Model Program

The program is designed for middle & high school students (6th-12th grades) as a fun way to get their portraits taken by a professional photographer, feel like a model, and have a unique experience.

Students who apply are active on social media and are involved in school activities and their community. They have reliable transportation and have good time management skills to participate in 3 photo shoots a year.

Student Models have special Senior Portrait Pricing, receive cash referrals, exclusive themes, discounts on prints, digital images, products, and mini sessions. They have opportunities to earn Model Points, which can be applied to images or sessions.

The Student Model Program offers a variety of locations, poses, and a mix of individual and group photos with the other models. Student Models also gain confidence and learn time management and communication skills by working with a professional.
