Years ago I stumbled upon posts from a well-known photographer, Thomas Nguyen Photography, who created Project Beauty. He took these gorgeous black-and-white images of his senior rep team. His goal was to emphasize their natural beauty. This soon became a movement as more photographers started to do the same thing and he was encouraging other photographers to join the movement.

I’ve been an advocate for women’s empowerment since college. A good friend/co-worker inspired me. We both used to be Resident Assistants for the dorms and we would put on programs in March for International Women’s Day, which is celebrated every year all around the world on March 8th. When I started my business I always wanted to use my photography to celebrate International Women’s Day and when I found out about Project Beauty, it felt like the perfect solution!

The Set-Up

We schedule Project Beauty photo shoots all month in March and they are located in my home studio with a black seamless paper backdrop. I like to keep these photos simple but there are only so many poses for standing and sitting on the floor. To give some variety while keeping it simple, we use different seating options such as stools, chairs, and ottomans. I’ve even used my step-ladder.

Project Beauty Outfits

There are 2 major rules for this shoot. You can’t wear makeup and you can’t wear dark or black clothes. Since all images are in black and white, dark or black clothes will make you blend into the backdrop. Other than that, you can style your hair however you want and you can wear a casual outfit. I highly recommend avoiding graphics though. Graphics can be pretty distracting in general. The black and white images highlight the graphics.

Project is the only theme that I open up to the public and I highly encourage women of all ages to join us! It’s been so empowering for everyone who does a shoot. I’ve had so many women of different ages (including my mom) and I love it. Here are a few of my favorites from 2023.

Oh and I forgot to mention, mother/daughter shoots are encouraged! It’s also a good idea to have your sibling to join and we can get individual and group photos!
